Wine in art: Jan Vermeer

Uvamatris also provides for your culture!

“The glass of wine” oil painting on canvas by Jan Vermeer, seventeenth-century dutch painter best known for the painting “Girl with a pearl earring”.

In this picture we can see a seated woman drinking a glass of wine and a standing man who’s holding a jug and seems to be waiting for the woman to fill her glass again. In foreground, on the chair, there’s a musical instrument which suggests that the two have just finished to playing or they’re about to do it. In the days, music and wine were the characteristic features of love representation. Over the stained glass we can see a female figure, maybe the one who represents Temperance. A call for restraint in alcohol and also in love.
